The TCRT5000 IR Sensor Module with LM393 Comparator is a reflective infrared sensor designed for short-range object detection and line tracking applications. It integrates the reliable TCRT5000L reflective sensor and an LM393 voltage comparator chip to provide a stable and accurate digital output. Ideal for use in robotics, automation systems, and proximity-based detection projects, this module is compact, efficient, and highly customizable via an onboard sensitivity adjustment potentiometer.
Features:
Operating voltage range: 3.5V to 5V DC
Low current consumption: approximately 15mA
Built-in TCRT5000L reflective infrared sensor
Equipped with LM393 dual voltage comparator chip
Adjustable sensitivity using onboard potentiometer
Digital output signal for easy interfacing with microcontrollers
Integrated detection status LED for real-time feedback
Optimal detection range: 3 mm to 30 mm depending on surface reflectivity
Technical Highlights:
Sensor type: Infrared reflective (TCRT5000L)
Output type: Digital (HIGH or LOW depending on obstacle presence)
Output goes LOW when an object is detected (logic may vary based on version)
Onboard potentiometer allows fine-tuning of detection sensitivity
Signal processing handled by LM393 comparator for stable output
Pin Configuration:
VCC: Power supply input (3.5V to 5V)
GND: Ground
DO: Digital Output (connects to microcontroller GPIO)
Working Principle:
The TCRT5000 sensor emits infrared light that reflects off nearby objects. When a surface is within the detection range, the reflected light is captured by the phototransistor inside the sensor. The LM393 comparator processes this signal and sends a digital output to indicate the presence or absence of an obstacle. The module also lights up the onboard LED when an object is detected.
Applications:
Line-following robots
Obstacle-avoiding robotic systems
Proximity-based triggering mechanisms
Industrial automation for object detection or alignment
DIY electronics and Arduino-based projects
Anti-collision detection in smart cars or toys
Advantages:
Simple to use with digital signal output
Adjustable detection range via potentiometer
Works reliably in varying lighting conditions (within limits)
Compatible with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other development boards
Compact and durable design for embedded or mobile use
Important Notes:
Best results occur with reflective, light-colored surfaces
Avoid pointing directly at sunlight or bright ambient light
Mount securely to prevent changes in sensor angle or distance
Ensure correct polarity and supply voltage to avoid damage
